Cellulite! It’s the evil of all fat and it inflicts itself on women of all ages and of all shapes and sizes, even athletes. I recently read an article of a female athlete who was seriously fit (with the abs to prove it) but who also had visible cellulite on the backs of her thighs. No matter what you do or what size you are, cellulite can affect anyone and it has a lot to do with genetics and the biology of the female body.
In this article we explain what it is that causes this loathsome fat to bulge the way it does and discuss the best ways to attack it head-on.
What Causes Cellulite?
“Cottage cheese”or “orange peel” texture, call it what you will but that dimpled appearance that occurs most commonly on women’s thighs and buttocks is caused by two things; fat and collagen fibres (connective tissue).
The lumpy or dimpled texture appears when the fat cells push up through the connective tissue that holds the skin down. The reason why it is so common in women and uncommon is men is due to how the collagen fibres are layed down. In women the fibres are straight up and down whereas in men they have more of a lattice or “criss-cross” form which makes it much more difficult for the fat to bulge.
How Can I Improve My Cellulite?
There are 3 key things you can do to improve the appearance of your cellulite:
-
Improve circulation
Getting active and improving your circulation will not only help to reduce lumpy fat, but it will revitalise your mind and body as well. Cellulite has only become a problem for women in the last 3-4 decades as we have become much less active. With office jobs and cars to take us anywhere, we do a fraction of the steps that our grandmothers and great grandmothers used to do. Increased blood-flow will get oxygen and other vital nutrients to your cells and connective tissues to help keep them strong and healthy.
We also wear much tighter underwear these days which goes against good circulation. Swap the compression underwear or pantyhose for something more like your grandmother used to wear (joking!) but do get into something a bit comfier, particularly if you sit for long periods of time.
-
Burn the fat!
There’s no denying that shedding the fat will help to improve the texture of your thighs and buttocks. Eating a healthy diet and exercising are the first step, but what if you’re super fit and eat the right diet but still have dimply skin? You should then look at remodeling your collagen and tightening your skin.

Remodel collagen and tighten skin
We know that fat and collagen fibres are the key causes of why fat bulges on our thighs and buttocks. As we age our skin starts to sag, so a bit of skin tightening could go a long way too. What if I told you there is a medical-grade device that has been clinically proven to target fat, stimulate the production of collagen and tighten the skin for a noticeable reduction in cellulite….
The VelaShape III from Syneron Candela has been proven in numerous clinical studies. It is FDA cleared giving you peace of mind that it is safe and really does work. During the treatment, a handpiece is “rolled” over the area to be treated – it feels like a firm and very warm deep- tissue massage. It uses radio-frequency, infrared light, suction and massage that all work together to trigger the fat cells to release fat, remodel collagen and improve circulation. The result is visibly smoother and tighter skin.
