IPL is commonly referred to as IPL laser treatment, so it’s easy to incorrectly assume IPL is a true laser. Many people that we consult admit to having IPL in the past and vividly remember how painful it was. Syneron Candela have developed the Gentle series of medical grade lasers so patients can enjoy virtually pain-free treatment whilst achieving permanent hair reduction.
In this article, we explain the difference between the leading laser hair removal technology versus painful IPL.
What’s The Difference Between IPL and Medical Grade Laser?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and Laser are generally referred to as “laser hair removal”, however IPL is not true laser treatment. IPL results in inefficient treatment as it emits multiple wavelengths during treatment which means scattered energy that does not precisely target the hair follicle, often resulting in damage to the skin, aka pain. Burns from IPL have been reported, with higher risk for darker skin types and people using inexperienced clinics.
For virtually pain-free laser hair removal, we recommend Gentle technology. A true laser device emits one wavelength, resulting in a more targeted and efficient treatment where the surrounding tissue remains unharmed. Laser treatments have been clinically studied for years and are considered the ideal solution for permanent hair reduction. The leading laser combined with an experienced clinician will lead to the optimum experience.
How Does True Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal works by directly targeting the pigment in the hair and damaging the hair follicle with a concentrated pulse of energy. Hair growth stops due to the damage to the hair follicle.
Depending on your hair type and growth cycles, you may need between 6 and 10 sessions for complete removal. Multiple sessions are required as hair grows in different stages – Anagen (the growth stage), Catagen (the intermediate stage) and Telogen (the resting or shedding stage). All hairs are never at the same stage at the same time, so consecutive treatment sessions are needed to treat the hair as it goes through the cycles. Laser treatment has the greatest impact when the hair is in the growth stage.
