Starting a family is an amazing time of your life, but it certainly takes a toll on your body. The female body has an incredible power to heal itself, but sometimes there are parts that we need a little help with. Stretch marks for example. If you have finished having kids, you may be considering treatment to repair your stretch marks.
In this article we discuss stretch marks, various treatment options and when the best time is to start treatment. Improving the look of your stretch marks can help you feel good about your skin sooner.
Stretch Marks During Pregnancy
The most common time for women to experience stretch marks is during pregnancy. They can also appear during puberty and weight / muscle gain, but pregnancy is top of the list due to the speed at which those beautiful unborn babies grow.
The pregnancy “tiger stripes” typically appear on the belly, breasts and flanks and are likely to pop up right in those last weeks when your skin has stretched to its limit. Stretch marks form in the dermis, the second layer of the skin, when the connective tissue has expanded quickly. They appear red or purple due to the blood vessels showing through the tears in the dermis. Over time they fade to a white / silvery colour.
Treatment of stretch marks can be done anytime, however treatment will be more effective when the marks are still fairly new as there are still active blood vessels around the area that aid in the healing process.
Treatment for Stretch Marks
Due to the damage from the stretch mark that occurs in the dermis, most creams, oils, lotions or gels won’t be able to penetrate deep enough to have a healing effect on the stretch mark itself. They will however most likely nourish the area around the stretchmark, promoting healthier skin, however will not heal the stretch mark.
At our Feel Good Laser & Skin Clinic in Richmond, we offer 2 main treatments – Sublative™ Rejuvenation and Dermarolling – that will target stretch marks within the dermis and reduce their appearance. Sublative™ Rejuvenation, is a fractional radio frequency treatment that delivers heat into the dermis, causing a heat controlled injury and promoting the skin to rapidly heal itself. This stimulation will cause the stretch mark in the dermis to begin its healing process again and can significantly fade them over time. Each person will have different results, however we recommend a minimum of 3 Sublative™ treatments to see significant results.
We also offer Dermarolling which involves fine needles being rolled into the skin to cause a controlled injury to the dermis to promote the stretch mark to heal and renew itself. There is no heat involved with this treatment and the needle depth is different for each client. Both Sublative™ Rejuvenation and Dermarolling are great treatments for stretch marks and reduce the appearance significantly where visible results appear in as little as 3 treatments.
