We have compiled a list of 10 things you may not have known about laser hair removal to help you decide if this treatment is right for you and prepare you for what to expect.
10 Things About Laser Hair Removal
1. Laser hair removal is one of the top cosmetic treatments today
Since its debut in the 90’s, laser treatment for removing unwanted hair has grown significantly both technologically and in popularity. This is because most people are suitable candidates for treatment. Many men and women are tired of the traditional methods of hair removal like shaving or waxing which only provides temporary removal of the hairs. Hair removal by laser is non-invasive, safe, comfortable and has long-lasting results.
2. Not all lasers are the same
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and true laser are often confused, however, they are quite different. Lasers emit a single wavelength of light which maximises treatment effectiveness. In contrast, IPL emits various wavelengths to various chromophores thereby reducing efficiency.
3. Laser hair removal can save you time & money
Added advantages to this treatment are the savings you may accumulate by not wasting time and money on traditional hair removal techniques. Typically, you would need to have multiple waxing appointments every month or shave every few days. As a long-term solution. laser cuts out the continuous costs of these appointments and constant need to purchase razors.

4. There is a best hair type for optimal results
While the Gentle Lase Pro works on most skin and hair types, those with pale skin and dark hair will see the best results. The greater the difference between the hair and skin pigment, the more focused the energy will be targeting the hair follicle.
5. Before your treatment, waxing and plucking are out
In the lead-up to your treatment there are several guidelines to follow to ensure you are achieving the best possible results for you. One of the most important rules to follow is to make sure you do not wax or pluck your hair prior to your treatment. This precaution is to allow your hair enough time to grow and therefore be targeted by the laser. During a treatment, the laser looks for the hair follicles, if those follicles have been removed, your treatment will not have the same effect.
6. Shaving before your appointment is important
On the day of, or the day before your treatment, you should shave the area you are treating with a razor. This allows the laser to focus on the hair follicle it is targeting more precisely.
7. Keep your tan at bay prior to treatments
There is a four-week gap before treatments in which you should need to avoid sun exposure. Minimising your tan will ensure the most effective outcome for you and don’t forget if you are sunburnt you cannot receive treatment at all. Sun exposure following treatment must also be avoided as your skin is at a much greater rick of burning and hyperpigmentation issues following laser treatment.
8. Spray tans and lotions will impact your treatment
It is important to make sure spray tans and self-tanning products are avoided for at least two weeks before. The reason for this is the same as sun tanning so make sure you leave enough time for your tan to wash off completely and exfoliate thoroughly.
9. After your treatment, you may have some irritation
You may notice, following your treatment session, that you experience some redness and slight irritation. This is normal and will vary person to person. For added comfort, your laser technician will go through recommended and prescribed post care to minimise any effects.
10. Why you will need more than one appointment
Your hair grows in a four-stage cycle. The anagen (growth) stage, catagen (regressions) stage, telogen (resting) stage and finally the exogen (shedding) stage. This is important as the first two stages of this cycle are considered the most effective time for treatment. You will need several appointments on each area to achieve the best results, to catch the hair and treat it during the right hair growth cycle stage. Your technician will be able to guide you on how may treatments to expect.
